La Fortuna

Arenal Volcano

Introduction

The Arenal volcano is one of Costa Rica's active volcanoes. It warms up springs and rivers with its underground heat, making it a top attraction in Northern Costa Rica and a big part of La Fortuna's charm. The last eruptive period began with a major explosive eruption in 1968 and ended in December 2010.

You can explore the volcano's base and see the lava rocks by visiting the national park or a private reserve. A great spot to see the eruption's effects is Arenal Volcano National Park. There, you can hike on your own or with a guide for $15 USD per adult. Another part of the park, called the Peninsula Sector, offers a view of Lake Arenal.

Near the national park, you can also hike in private reserves like Arenal 1968, which offers impressive views. The reserve is open every day until 6 PM.
