Rental Requirements

To rent a car from our La Fortuna location, please ensure you have the following documents and meet the requirements:

1. A valid and original driver’s license issued at least 2 years ago. This license is valid for 90 days in Costa Rica, starting from the entry date stamped on your passport. If your license is in a non-Latin alphabet such as Hebrew or Mandarin, you'll need an International Driver's License. We do not accept provisional licenses or photocopies.

1. Present a valid and original identity card and/or passport. If using a passport, it must have the entry stamp to Costa Rica.

1. Have a Credit Card (MasterCard, VISA, Discover, or American Express) with a printed name matching the cardholder's ID. This card will be used for a refundable deposit of US$500 - US$1,000 depending on the car rented. Debit cards and cash deposits are not accepted.

1. The minimum age for renting a car is 21 years old.

Request, Modify, Cancellation, No Show or Early Return Bookings

Reservation / Booking

1. To make a reservation we need the following information:
   • Name and Surname
   • Car category
   • Date, hour and place of delivery (Hotel or Flight Number)
   • Date, hour and place of collection (Hotel or Flight Number)
2. Extra services to include, such as: extra coverages, accessories, drop off fees or one way rentals, etc.

Modification of Reservation

1. A booking can be modified up to 72 hours before beginning the rental (upon availability) with no penalty. Changes in pick up location may have extra fees.

Cancellation or No-Show

1. Penalty of 2 days of rent without insurance, for late cancellations 72 hours before the start of the service, or for a No-Show. We will consider a No-Show when a client has 2 hours of delay picking up the car and has not contacted us.

Early Return of Rental Vehicle

1. In the event that the rented vehicle is returned earlier than the agreed date, a partial refund applies.

Conditions of Payment

1. At the moment of the rental, the full rental cost, plus extra expenses will be charged to your credit card.

General Insurance and Coverage Conditions

1. Please refer to the Coverage section.
2. Violations of the Costa Rica Traffic Legislation are full responsibility of the rentee.

Rental Conditions & Policies

1. Rental period: Our standard rental period is 24 hours.
2. Late return policy: If the car is returned more than 4 hours late, you will be charged at the daily rate.
3. Travel restrictions: Our cars cannot be taken outside of Costa Rica.
4. Additional drivers: With the appropriate documentation, additional drivers will be added, free of charge.
5. Deposit: Cash and debit cards are not accepted for deposits. Only credit cards are accepted.
6. Airport services: We offer a meet and greet service at the airport with exact flight details provided. Otherwise, free shuttle services are available at both San Jose and Liberia airports during office hours. For after-hours assistance, please call our emergency 24/7 number.
7. Hotel delivery: We provide complimentary delivery of the car to hotels within a 12-mile radius of our office in La Fortuna.
8. Insurance: Liability Protection is mandatory. Car Protection may be declined with a letter from the credit card company providing coverage. Note that as of October 1st, 2021, VISA Gold and Platinum cardholders no longer have collision damage waiver benefits in Costa Rica.
9. Optional coverage: Extended Protection is available upon request.
10. One-way rentals: One-way rentals and drop-off fees may apply. Please contact us for details.
11. Mileage: Rentals less than 30 days include free mileage.
12. Distance for free delivery: The maximum distance for complimentary delivery is 25 kilometers.

Additional Information & Conditions

Extra Driver

1. La Fortuna Rent a Car does not charge any extra for additional drivers, you must state how many drivers. In all the cases the drivers must have a driver license with at least 2 years of issue. The rental agreement has to include all drivers.

No Smoking Policy

1. It is strictly prohibited to smoke inside the car. In case of any smell, there will be a charge of at least $100.

Fuel Charge

1. All vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel (please check if the car uses petrol-gasoline or diesel fuel), please returned as it was delivered. If the car receives an incorrect fuel, all associated costs to correct the problem will be charged to the rentee. Refueling charges will apply.

Fuel Charge

1. Loss/Steal of Car License plates has a replacement penalty from US$100.
2. Loss/Steal/Damage of car mandatory documents has a replacement penalty from US$100.
3. Loss/Steal of car keys has a replacement penalty from US$150 to US$500; if the car key holder is electronic or customized to the car rented a replacement penalty from US$300 applies.
4. US$100 penalty for excessive dirt.
5. US$100 penalty for smoking in the car.
